For the uncertified diver who still wants to see what the island's waters hold, there's an accessible shallow reef right off the beach at Anse de Cayes if you have your own mask and fins. Several local water-sports shops can arrange guided dive trips further out.

WINDSURFING

Windsurfing fever has definitely caught on in St. Barths. Gentle, constant trade winds make conditions ideal on most of the beaches. You can rent boards for about $20 an hour at water-sports centers on the beaches. Lessons are offered for about $40 an hour and for $60, you can typically have a one-hour introductory lesson, along with the use of the windsurfer for as long as you can stand up.
